Tips for Creating an Ambient Ensuite

The ensuite can offer a home owner an everyday retreat when it captures the right mood. Here, leading interior designer Dominique Tiller shares her tips for a sensual ensuite haven.
  • Tiling - Warmer neutral colour tones work the best particularly in a matt finish as opposed to a high gloss reflective finish. If the budget allows, choose a natural stone for the floor as this will provide a softer surface than a porcelain tile and absorb the heat making them warmer to the feet, Eg. Italian Limestone. There are plenty of travertine tiles on the market now for the same price as a porcelain tile.

  • Lighting - Provide different sources of lighting including task lighting with downlights over the vanity area positioned central to each basin and recessed floor uplighters around or underneath the bath. Avoid downlights over a bath at all costs! Candles and strip lighting under vanity (this can be left on at night as a guidelight) and of course natural light work wonderfully in the ensuite.
  • Declutter - aim to keep the vanity benchtops as clutter free as possible. Incorporate GPO power sockets within mirrored cabinets or within the drawers below, so that you can store and charge electric toothbrushes, hairdryers, electric shavers. Use a collection of jars on a tray to store everyday cleansing items - eg cotton buds, pads, tissues, bath crystals, grooming items.

  • Luxury - Orchids love the bathroom environment and thrive in the moist heat and shade. Position by the bath or on the vanity bench. Use thick luxurious towels - either white or charcoals and fragrant hand and body wash to create an ambient vibe.
